William was the son of William a Supervisor in the Inland Revenue Office Born North Crawley, Buckinghamshire 1847 and Elizabeth Born Beverley East Yorkshire 1846.
William had brothers Tom, Percy, Joseph and Alfred C. also sisters Ann L, and Eva M.
Whilst at Leeds Boys modern William was a keen sportsman and was the first winner of the Senior Challenge cup in 1894.
William left Leeds Boys and worked as a warehouseman and in September 1914 went with htousends of other men to the Town Hall in Leeds to enlist joining the 15th Bn Leeds Pals.
After training at Colsterdale, Ripon and Salisbury William went to Egypt with his regiment and then onto France.
William was one of the senior Leeds Modern Boys to fall near Serre with many of his class mates and pals from Leeds.
