Sydney was the son of Charles who lived in woodhouse Lane Leeds. In 1906 after leaving Leeds Boys Modern Sydney joined the Leeds Boys Rifle Brigade, being the Adjutant at the summer camp held at Windermere in August 1914 at the outbreak of war.
Sydney joined the Leeds University Officer Training Corps and volunteered for service going to France with the Royal Army Medical Corps in October 1914.
Sydney first saw action on the 5th of November 1914 near Ieper in Belgium.
In July 1915 he gained his commision in the Kings Royal Rifles.
Sydney fought with this regiment throughout the war when it was reported he had lost his life repulsing a german attack south east of Arras.
The CWGC website gives the following details.
"Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. Barrand, of Leeds; husband of Olive Evelyn Barrand, of 99, Putney Bridge Rd., Putney, London."
