Lawrence attended Leeds Boys Modern and was a member of the Schools Cadet Corps between 1915 and 1917 ,he was accepted into the Royal air Force and trained at Farnborough and other camps.

Lawrence gained his commision in July 1918, and was posted to france on the 4th of August 1918, he was at the front eighteen (18) days when he lost his life.
