"Son of Mrs. E. F. Marshall, of Arthington, Leeds."
John was the son of John Born Bradford in 1852 and Elizabeth Francis Blakey Born Ripon in 1853, they had married in 1877 at Knaresborough.
John left Leeds Boys Modern and worked in Wellington Street Leeds as a Clerk, it was said he was a good cricketer and played for Arthington Cricket Club for many years.
In September 1914 John answreed the call and enlisted into the 1/7th Duke of Wellingtons Battalion, the Leeds Rifles, and was sent to France with the 49th Division.
John fought through the war finally he was reported wounded missing in the battle for Lys on the 13th April 1918, and it was reported that his grave was found
"at the roadside, one and a quarter miles west of Locre, two and a quarter miles north of Bailleul."
(The CWGC gives details of where John now lies and it mentions that after the Armistace 23 bodys from a roadside Cemetery 200 metres South-West of the hamlet of Wolfhoek were transfered to Mont-Noir Military Cemetery. It can be assumed by the above information that John was one of these 23 men.)
