"Son of Walter Samuel and Emily Braithwaite, of Leeds, Yorks".
James was the son of Walter Samuel an Architect Born Leeds 1855 and Emily Potter Born Leeds 1859 who married in Leeds in 1877.
The family lived in may House St Marks Avenue near St Marks Church in Woodhouse Leeds.
James studied architecture with his father and attended the Leeds School of art. He joined his father in practice, and became a member of the Royal Institute of British architects and a member of the council of the Leeds Architectural Society.
James joined up in April 1916 and after training was sent to France and passed away from wounds recieved on the 4th October 1916 at one of the many hospitals in Wimereux near Bolougne France.
