Herbert lies in peace in the same grave as Private Thomas Barnes, Born and enlisted in Leicester, Son of Thomas and Clara Barnes of Leicester. Aged just 19 when he passed away from wounds recieved.

Herbert was the son of James Herbert Born Brockholes with Honley near Huddersfield 1854 and Mary Eliza Marsland Born Leeds 1855 they married at Headingley Leeds in 1878.
Herbert left Leeds Boys Modern and joined his fathers business which was J.E Marsland on Water Lane Leeds in which he later became a partner.
Herbert was well known in the villages of Collingham near leeds and the market town of wetherby where he was member of the Golf club there, winning a trophy in 1914.
Herbert joined up in November 1915 into the Kings Royal Rifles and was promoted rapidly to Sergeant. He had just been recommended for his commision when he was wounded on the 15th September 1916, and Herbert passed away from wounds recieved.
The CWGC gives the following details.
"Son of Mrs. Mary Eliza Heap, of Oakland House, 70, Victoria Rd., Headingley, Leeds."
