Ernest was a teacher and held the post of Asisistant Head master at Tynemouth Municipal High School until 1913 when he arrived at Leeds Modern to the Post of Modern Language Master.

Ernest enlisted into the Rifle Brigade in April 1915 and in June 1915 was granted a commision into the 2nd Lancashire Fusilliers. He married a E. Tunnicliffe from Leeds in late 1915 and was posted to France in January 1916.

Ernest gave his life leading his men over the top on the morning of July 1st 1916, and lies where he fell to this day.
