Charles left school to work in the offices of the superintendant of the Great Northern Railway in Leeds.
In June 1917 Charles joined the 17th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment the Leeds Bantams, and was posted to France as a Lewis Gunner Sergeant in January 1916.
Charles was gazetted as 2nd Lieutenant for services in the field, and was posted to the 12th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment in the January of 1917.
In the August of that year he was given the rank of Acting Captain and Adjutant,and in February was posted with the 10th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment holding the same rank.
Charles was promoted to Lieutenant in August 1918 in the 1st Bn West Yorkshire Regiment, again been given the rank of Acting Captain and Adjutant. Charles was mentioned in the Commander in Chief's despatches for showing gallent conduct in both April and the July of 1918.
Sadly Charles lost his life on the 15th July 1918 and lies at peace in Poperinghe , Belgium.
