Cecil was for many years a member of the Leeds Boys Rifle Brigade, and at the outbreak of war enlisted into the 2nd West Riding Field Ambulance.
In January 1915 he attained his commision as a signal officer in the East Yorkshire Regiment later becoming brigade officer.
Cecil contracted pneumonia in early 1916 and was sent to a clearing station at Lijssenthoek Belgium where he passed away and lays at peace to this day.
