CEMETERY: The Ploegsteert Memorial stands in Berks Cemetery Extension,located 12.5 km south of Ieper Belgium.

Bernard was the son of Joseph a Tailor Born Wigton Cumberland 1867 and Sarah Ann Born Heckmondwike Yorkshire 1862. In 1901 the family were living on the Main Street Burley in Wharfdale near Ilkley.
Bernard enlisted in to the 15th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment Leeds Pals, in September 1914 at Leeds Town Hall and after training at Colsterdale and Salisbury Bernard went to Egypt in December 1915.
Bernard was promoted to 2nd Lietenant in the 10th Bn West Yorkshire Regiment and was attached back to the 15th Bn West Yorkshire'.
In March 1918 Bernard was given the rank of acting Captain on Staff duties, on the 12th April 1918 Bernard is reported to have rallied three Battalion's as they retreated and was shot down as they galloped forward.
His Commanding officer wrote:
"He was brave as a lion, conscientious in all he did, and devoted to his duty, for which he layed down his life".
Bernard lay's where he fell to this day and is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial,Belgium.
The CWGC shows the following.
"Son of Joseph and Sarah Ann (Annie) Reed, of 2, Well Close Place, Blackman Lane, Leeds."
