Thomas was born in Chapletown Leeds the younger brother of Alfred, he won a scholership at Leeds University in 1912 where he studied for his B.Sc Degree in the Department of fuel and gas engineering.
In September 1914 at Leeds Town Hall he enlisted into the 15th Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment the Leeds Pals and was given the service number 028.
After training at Colsterdale Near Masham Thomas served with the Pals in Egypt and France and was trained as a Machine Gunner, he was promoted and transferred to the Machine Gun Company of his Brigade and fell where he lies today.
