WORLD WAR ONE ROLL OF HONOUR FOR LEEDS BOYS MODERN SCHOOL

INTRODUCTION
My name is Dave Morris since early 2004 i have been researching local war memorials in and around the area of Tadcaster North Yorkshire.
This has involved gathering details of men who gave their lives in the great war between 1914-1919 from both books and local newspapers of the time in local library's including Leeds, York and Selby.
Whilst researching it became apparant that a lot of men who attended Leeds Boys Modern School had gave their lives during the first world war.
Having been brought up in Leeds and never hearing the term Leeds Boys Modern i assumed it was the old name for Leeds Boys High School.
I then chanced upon a website ran by Sandra Midgley describing a school to the west of Leeds on the outer ring road named Leeds Girls Modern.
HISTORY
SANDRA MIDGLEY PROVIDES THE FOLLOWING DETAILS
In 1845,The Mechanics Institute of Leeds (a philanthropic organisation) founded an independent boys grammar school called The Mathematical and Commercial School. Nine years later they also founded a school for girls at a separate location.
In 1889 the boys moved to new premises and their school was renamed Leeds Boys Modern School.
From what i can gather the premises they had were too small and in 1931 Leeds Boys Modern became part of Lawnswood High School. In 1944 after the state education act the schoool became a state grammer school.
AIM
The aim of the site is to give details of old boys of this school who paid the ultimate price by giving their lives in the Great War.
And to ensure that these brave young men of Leeds are not forgotten and that where possible their story can be told including photos of their last resting place and a picture of the individual.
(To view details of each man click on the name on the left hand side of the page.)
If you would like to contribute any details of men mentioned on this site, or if you know of any other men who attended this school and gave their lives, including photographs or how the men gave their lives please feel free to contact me on the e mail below or in my GUESTBOOK any contributions will be appreciated and acknowledged on the site.
